Core Speed and Performance Terms, Defined
The terms below appear repeatedly on plan pages, speed test results, and router dashboards. Each one describes a different dimension of internet performance.
Mbps
Megabits per second — the standard unit for measuring internet connection speeds. One megabit equals one million bits of data. Most home broadband plans are sold in Mbps.
Gbps
Gigabits per second — equal to 1,000 Mbps. Gbps is used to describe high-speed fiber plans and network infrastructure. A 1 Gbps (or "gig") plan can handle multiple simultaneous users and data-heavy tasks with ease.
Latency
The time it takes for a data packet to travel from your device to a server and back, measured in milliseconds (ms). Lower latency means a more responsive connection; high latency causes noticeable lag in gaming, video calls, and real-time apps.
Bandwidth
The maximum volume of data a connection can carry at once, like the width of a pipe. Higher bandwidth allows more simultaneous streams of data without slowdown.
Download speed
The rate at which data travels from the internet to your device. Streaming video, loading web pages, and downloading files all rely primarily on download speed.
Upload speed
The rate at which data travels from your device to the internet. Video calls, cloud backups, and posting media depend heavily on upload speed.
Ping
A measurement of round-trip latency, expressed in milliseconds. It's commonly used in speed tests and gaming contexts to gauge how quickly a server responds to a request from your device.
Jitter
Variability in latency over time. If ping fluctuates widely rather than staying consistent, the result is jitter — which disrupts video calls and online gaming even when average speeds seem acceptable.
Throughput
The actual amount of data successfully transferred over a connection in a given time, as opposed to the theoretical maximum bandwidth. Real-world throughput is almost always lower than advertised speed.
Packet loss
The percentage of data packets that fail to reach their destination. Even small amounts of packet loss (1–2%) can noticeably degrade the quality of voice and video calls.
Symmetrical speed
A connection where download and upload speeds are equal. Fiber connections commonly offer symmetrical speeds, while cable internet typically delivers much faster downloads than uploads.
Data cap
A monthly limit on how much data you can transfer over your internet connection. Exceeding it may result in overage charges, throttled speeds, or service interruption depending on the provider.
Understanding the difference between bandwidth, throughput, and latency is especially important. Advertised Speed vs. Real-World Speed
Internet plans are marketed at theoretical maximums under ideal conditions. Actual throughput depends on network congestion, Wi-Fi signal quality, your router's age, and how many devices are online at once. Putting It All Together: Reading Your Speed Test Results
A speed test reports several of the metrics above simultaneously. Here's how to interpret what you see:
- Download Mbps: The headline number. Compare it to your plan's advertised speed. Significant shortfalls (below 80% of advertised) are worth investigating.
- Upload Mbps: Critical for video calls and cloud backups. If yours seems disproportionately low relative to download, you may be on an asymmetrical cable plan — which is normal for cable, less so for fiber.
- Ping (ms): Your round-trip latency. Under 20 ms is excellent; 20–100 ms is acceptable for most uses; above 150 ms becomes noticeable in video calls and gaming.
- Jitter (ms): Ideally below 10 ms. High jitter often matters more than high average latency for voice and video quality.
